As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” -1 Peter 4:10
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.” -1 Peter 5:7-9
I was trying to think of some brilliant way to tie this all together. I thought about adding a personal story or an example of casting my anxieties, or being watchful, and resisting the temptation of the enemy. Or a time when I was able to acknowledge the suffering that I was going through was being shared with all believers around the world. But each time I think I have a story or a great example, I take a step back and realize I definitely don’t have anything brilliant to share. Because I am currently in the thick of it, trying to figure out how to be the Gospel. How to be the Body of Christ.
If I can only say a couple things, they would be: YOU are unique, created just as God intended you to be with specific gifts, and you are responsible to be good stewards of his GRACE extended to you freely through those gifts and talents. And as you go through your daily life, you will experience the planned, the unplanned, the exciting, the painful, the good and the bad. Yet we are not alone. That is why we live in community, small groups, and friends; so we can spur each other on in our faith. But it’s a bigger picture than that. We are a part of a brotherhood of believers (5:9) that experience the same things we do!
I just met with a new friend who told me of her recent move to DC, and it was such a gift to be able to share my story of coming to DC as well. Our stories are very similar, but I am several months ahead of her and it was incredible to be able to encourage her and challenge her in ways that I knew that I had a hard time with. That is the beauty of the brotherhood. I don’t know about you, but what cooler opportunity to be a part of a brotherhood, than one that is based on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Glorify the Father. You are not alone. Stay Humble.
