What God Hates

Written by Heather Zempel | September 23, 2010 | Proverbs 5 - 7

The Proverbs are so packed with good content. Where do you begin? How about with the stuff God hates? Yeah, that’s a cheery way to start the day. You can count on Heather to always look for the positive. I don’t know what it was, but for some reason I was just struck by Proverbs 6:16-19 today. The six things…or make that seven…that the Lord hates.

Christians are known to hate a lot of things. You know, those people who claim to have relationship with God and represent him. We hate people who are not like us. We hate sinners and those who hang out with those who do. We hate movies that depict sinners and songs sung by sinners. Some of us hate alcohol while others of us hate those who hate alcohol. Some of us hate dancing and tobacco. Some of us hate legislation that doesn’t force people to act the way we want them to act while others hate legislation that does force people to act they way we want them to act. We hate lots of stuff.

What about God? What stirs righteous anger within Him? Eyes that look at others with an air of superiority. Lies. Hands that kill the innocent. Wicked hearts that scheme. Feet that move quickly to evil. False witness that breathes out lies (that lying thing got mentioned twice). And one who “sows discord among brothers.” That’s someone who trashes community.

I had to take a moment this morning for reflection. Where does my life reflect the things that God hates? Do I love what God loves and hate what He hates and live my life accordingly? I’m also so grateful today for the grace of God. Who looks at me just like I am but sees me under the blood of Christ. May our desire be that our hearts turn more and more to God so that we can be turned more and more like Him.
